DEPARTMENT PROFILE
The Institute of Community Medicine at Madurai Medical College is a premier academic and research center dedicated to advancing public health and preventive medicine. Originally functioning as a department since 1953, it was elevated to the status of an institute in 1998, marking a significant milestone in its growth and academic excellence. The institute has been shaped by pioneering contributions from distinguished faculty such as Dr. Ayyadurai, Dr. C.N. Navaneetha Krishnan, Dr. Selvakumari, and Dr. Chitra, whose vision and leadership laid a strong foundation for community-oriented medical education.
With a focus on epidemiology, biostatistics, health management, and preventive care, the institute plays a vital role in training medical students and engaging in impactful field-based research and national health programs. The introduction of postgraduate training from 2019 further strengthened its academic profile, fostering advanced learning and research in community medicine. The establishment of the Clinical Epidemiology Unit in 2025 represents a recent advancement, enhancing the institute’s capacity for high-quality research, data analysis, and evidence-based clinical decision-making.
In addition, the institute actively implements the Family Adoption Programme, an innovative teaching–learning initiative that enables undergraduate

students to engage directly with families in the community. This program fosters a deeper understanding of social determinants of health, continuity of care, and preventive strategies at the household level. Through its urban and rural health training centers, the institute continues to bridge clinical practice with community health needs, promoting holistic and evidence-based healthcare delivery.
